Hector Pimentel’s Style and Technique
Classical guitar has always been Hector Pimentel’s interest, and when he plays
contemporary music or flamenco, that background emerges. Strongly influenced by
Andres Segovia, Hector says, "I wanted to be Segovia, to play the way he did – with
strength and love. I admired Chet Atkins’ smooth flowing style, too. I was inspired
and encouraged by both. Actually, I combine their techniques with my own, as I keep
striving for perfection and more perfection."
His technique consists more of musical concentration than flamboyance. Using
Segovia-style fingering, he applies free strokes to arpeggios and scales, rest
strokes for heightening melody. Piccado, tremolo and thumb octaves add shading.
And he sustains rhythmic power through a combination of thumb/middle finger action
and whole-hand movement from the wrist.
As his career has flourished, Hector has expanded the range of influences from
which he draws. He now lists the Gypsy Kings, the legendary Los Indios de
Tavajaras, rockers of the 50s, 60s and 70s, and Mozart, Bach, Chopin, Tarrega, and
Sor as influential. |
